Child's backpack contained enough heroin to qualify for felony possession.
After the family dog destroyed her regular back pack, the replacement offered by her mother made an otherwise standard trip to day care anything but for our four-year-old in Delaware: Selbyville, DE police say the child’s backpack contained baggies of heroin, which the child began handing out, thinking it was candy, The News Journal reports.
None of the packets were opened by any of the kids,” Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier told The News Journal on Monday night. Several children were checked out at area hospitals as a precaution, but all were released, he said.
All told, the backpack contained 3.375 grams of heroin – enough for a felony possession charge, police say – but the mother won’t be charged for possession or intent to distribute. Instead, Ashley R. Tull, 30, of Selbyville has been charged with maintaining a drug property and three counts of child endangerment (a nine- and 11-year-old also live in the home). Police placed the children in the custody of relatives.
Staff at the Hickory Tree Child Care Center called police and emergency medical responders at around 11:45 a.m. as soon as they noticed children handling bags of white powder. Police say the day care owners acted accordingly and “can’t imagine” holding them accountable for the snafu.
Tull was freed Monday on a $6,000 secured bail, but has been ordered to have no contact with the children while the investigation is pending. As of now, police refuse to say whose heroin it was, saying only that the investigation is ongoing and more charges will be filed.
