Popular cult series to make its return to television after twenty-five years.
ABC’s Twin Peaks was taken off the air in 1991, but in 2016, the show will return to television as a nine-episode limited series on Showtime. The original Twin Peaks creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, will return to helm the series, with Lynch directing and both creators producing and writing every episode.
From 1990 to 1991, Twin Peaks followed Dale Cooper, an FBI agent who was looking into the death of Laura Palmer in the titular Washington town. The series starred Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jack Nance, and Russ Tamblyn. None of the original cast have been officially confirmed to return as of yet, but Frost told Deadline, “We hope to have more to say about that soon. I think you’ll have the answer to that sooner rather than later.”
The new episodes will reportedly take place in the modern day, and will extend the story of the original episodes. Frost is emphasizing that since the new episodes will reflect the passage of time since viewers saw the show’s key characters, the Showtime Twin Peaks should be considered a continuation, not a remake or reboot.
“For those followers of the show who felt bereft when the show ended where it did all those years ago are going to like where it goes from here,” Frost told Variety. “And we hope that a lot of people who haven’t been to Twin Peaks yet are going to be equally interested in where the story goes from where we left off.”
While Frost has not stated what the plans for the show will be after these new nine episodes air, he said there is definite potential for more episodes if there is interest. “The proof will be in the pudding. If we have a great time doing it and everybody loves it and they decide there’s room for more, I could see it going that way.”
