Nation’s least generous state revealed

Utah is the nation's most generous state.

According to a report by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, wealthy Americans are giving a smaller portion of their income to charity. Poor and middle class Americans, on the other hand, are giving a larger portion of their income to charity based off of IRS data.

The study, which discovered that Americans give an average of three percent of their income to charity, uncovered sizable variations in giving patterns between the wealthy and poor and middle class Americans.

According to The Chronicle, wealthy Americans decreased the share of income they donated to charity by 4.6 percent from 2006 to 2012. By the same token, Americans, who earned less than $100,000, gave 4.5 percent more of their income during the same time period.

However, wealthy people are still giving a lot of money to charity. The total amount they donated increased by $4.6 billion to top $77.5 billion in 2012, according to data analyzed by The Chronicle.

Interestingly, Nevada’s residents increased their giving the most — almost 13 percent from 2006 to 2012. After the Silver State, Idaho, Georgia, Connecticut and Florida also experienced a sizable increase in the share of income they gave to charity.

According to The Chronicle, Utah is the nation’s most generous state. Residents of the state gave $65.60 of every $1,000 they earned to charity. New Hampshire, on the other hand, is the nation’s least generous station with residents handing over just $17.40 of every $1,000 they earned to charity.
