After contracting Ebola in Liberia and surviving, Dr. Richard Sacra was admitted into the hospital again for similar symptoms.
Dr. Rick Sacra of Massachusetts is reported to be free of the Ebola virus after having survived it earlier this year. Sacra had taken himself to the hospital on Saturday when it appeared that his symptoms had returned.
Testing revealed that he was in fact free of the virus. He had been placed in isolation as a safety precaution before the lab tests came back, but now he will be moved out of isolation. He is reported to be in stable condition and will receive treatment for a routine respiratory tract infection.
Though he presented with symptoms that included a low fever and a cough, doctors did not really expect Sacra to have contracted the virus a second time. According to Dr. Robert Finberg, the lead of Sacra’s medical team, the chance of a recurrence in Ebola seemed low because it was basically unheard of that any survivor had ever contracted the virus a second time.
Finberg stresses that Sacra and the hospital were using an abundance of caution when they chose how to handle this change in Sacra’s health. No chances were going to be taken with the health of Sacra or anyone he may have come in contact with.
A further reason Finberg was not overly concerned about Ebola was the fact that Sacra was eating. He claims that people with Ebola are nauseous and do not tend to eat.
Sacra contracted the Ebola virus in Liberia, where he had spent the last 20 years practicing medicine as part of a missionary group. He was treated in Omaha, Nebraska and returned to Massachusetts on September 25.
