The funny man who won over hearts with 'Father of the Bride' is poised to collect a lifetime achievement award from The American Film Institute in 2015!
In a much deserved win, it has been announced that Steve Martin will receive the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2015.
The 69-year-old actor is just only the second person to win this honor who is mainly a comedian. The other was Mel Brooks who was honored with the award in 2013. It is the American Film Institute’s highest honor and Martin is now among the likes of not only Brooks but other past winners like Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and Harrison Ford.
One must note that this honor is not just given to anyone but only to those “whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art; whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, professional peers and the general public; and whose work has stood the test of time.”
The official announcement that Martin would receive the award was made October 3. AFI chair Howard Stringer said, “From a wild and crazy stand-up comic to one who stands tall among the great figures in this American art form, he is a multi-layered creative force bound by neither convention nor caution. His work is defined by him alone, for he is the author – and a national treasure whose work has stuck with us like an arrow in the head.”
His AFI Life Achievement statue will likely sit among his Emmy, Grammys and of course his Oscar. He received an honorary Oscar in 2013 for all he has done over the years in film from his debut in 1979’s The Jerk to classics like Father of the Bride and Three Amigos!
