The new iPad will be announced Oct. 16 along with a new operating system, OS X Yosemite, and a new iMac with Retina display.
Although it just last month launched the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and teased the iWatch, Apple is not finished unveiling new products ahead of the upcoming holiday season. On Oct. 16, the Cupertino company is poised to debut new iPad and iPad Air units alongside the latest version of OS X Yosemite operating system and iMac desktops with Retina displays.
The Oct. 16 date was first floated by website Recode and since picked up by The Verge, which says Recode “has a very good track record with these dates.” A different report pegged the announcement to Oct. 21 but has now been debunked. Apple has yet to make an official announcement.
Details about new features in the new iPad are scarce, although WallStreetOTC presumes the new tablet will include the Touch ID fingerprint scanning system, which was first introduced in the iPhone 5S and will figure prominently as Apple Pay is rolled out.
Prior to 2012, Apple rolled out new iPads in the spring, spacing out its product release with the fall reserved for iPhone and iOS announcements. The Verge suggests clustering the release times together was done to accommodate “the busy holiday shopping season.”
The Oct. 16 event is likely to arrive without as much fanfare as the iPhone 6 announcement. Recode reports the upcoming event will be a “more laid-back affair,” although it will take place a the Flint Center, located near Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. The Verge added that “Apple rented out a much larger venue in San Jose two years ago when first unveiling the first iPad mini and revamped iMac, though kept it low key with an event in downtown San Francisco last year.”
