Horror film Annabelle pulled slightly ahead of crime thriller Gone Girl in theatres. The prequel and spinoff to The Conjuring had a surprisingly good debut with $15.5 million, but it is likely Gone Girl will inch ahead. The latter stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, and is based on the book of the same name. It has been a highly anticipated film, garnering very positive reviews from critics and audiences.
Annabelle is set in 1970 and is about a couple that moves into a new home. The wife is pregnant and receives a vintage doll as a gift from her husband. But one night, horror invades their home in the form of a satanic cult. They leave their evil behind in the doll, Annabelle. It becomes possessed and scary occurrences start to happen. The horror flick is reminiscent of Rosemary’s Baby and Chucky. In Gone Girl, the wife of a New York couple goes missing. In the intense media coverage, the focus turns on the husband and his potential involvement. Directed by David Fincher and based on the book by Gillian Flynn, it is a dark tale of marriage, with many twists and turns.
Annabelle got mixed reviews, but it seems the movie about a haunted doll was more popular this weekend. However it is the Halloween season and scary movies tend to do better. In the horror genre, it has done rather well compared to other movies. But Gone Girl has a strong chance of edging ahead. It is getting a lot of buzz, and that can draw audiences into theatres. With a good ensemble cast, the drama should do better in the coming weeks. For now, a haunted doll scared moviegoers, and may do well when Halloween rolls around. It is violent, but not gory, which may appeal to audiences.
