The man will be sentenced in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday.
According to a report from The Associated Press, 31-year-old Alex Donald Jackson could be sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder in his dogs’ fatal mauling of a woman as she walked near his house.
Jackson’s dogs reportedly attacked 63-year-old Pamela Devitt as she strolled past his house. After being bitten more than 100 times, Devitt died from blood loss. The woman’s DNA was eventually discovered on the dog’s fur.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. One five dog bits results in injuries serious enough to require medical attention. In 2012, for example, more than 27,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery as a result of being bitten by dogs. DogsBite.org notes that in 2013, 32 dog attacks resulted in death.
The Washington Times reports that prosecutors contend Jackson could have done more to prevent the attacks.
“His actions in this case show that he has a nearly psychopathic disregard for the lives and well-being of others,” Deputy District Attorney Ryan Williams said in a sentencing memo obtained by The AP.
Jackson, who was convicted of second-degree murder in September, will be sentenced in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday.
