While the main purpose is focused on authenticity, the E-delicious also has the ability to detect different spices in the dish.
Technology is constantly advancing at a rate where it seems like anything is possible. So amazing is this advancement that is now seems that something with no sense of taste or smell can detect the authenticity of food. According to reports from the New York Times, Thailand has manufactured robots that can “taste” Thai food and tell how true it is to original Thai cuisine.
This comes from former Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who started a program to build these robots after she was repeatedly disappointed by imitation cuisine while traveling abroad. Even though she and her cabinet were removed from office back in May, it seems the government took her plans to heart and decided to continue with the project. Now, Thai Delicious, the committee who oversaw the plans, have unveiled the “E-delicious” robot and says that it is able to “measure taste like a food critic”.
The robot itself is a small, box like contraption that measures the food placed inside it on a scale between one and one hundred. This may not seem like the most accurate detection system, but the machine comes with ten sensors which includes both taste and smell. Then, the rating of authenticity is based off of a database that was constructed from the results of a real taste survey taken in Asia.
While the main purpose is focused on authenticity, the E-delicious also has the ability to detect different spices in the dish, telling you if something is either too salty or too spicy. In addition to the actual robot, Thai Delicious has also released a free app, which includes official, government approved Thai recipes. While this machine, which looks to costs somewhere in the realm of $18,000, is not something most people will be able to go out and buy, it may be very important to some people who quest for the most authentic Thai food possible.
