Netflix signs four-film deal with Adam Sandler, US collectively furrows eyebrows

Streaming service to collaborate with comedian for four Netflix-exclusive "feature films."

Netflix has been leaving its mark in original television with successful series such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and the popular streaming service is now making plans to enter the film industry. Earlier this month, Netflix announced its intent to release a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel in August 2015, and now the company has surprisingly signed Adam Sandler to a four “feature film” deal.

“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world,” stated Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in the press release which announced Netflix’s collaboration with Sandler and Happy Madison Productions.

The Grown Ups star’s films have earned over $2 billion at the box office, but his latest films have received largely negative reviews. In fact, Sandler hasn’t made a movie that earned over a 50 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes in the past five years, and in that time, he’s written, produced or starred in 11 films.

Sander’s reaction to the film deal did little to reassure critics that he’s grown out of the immaturity that has caused a large number of his films to fail in the box office.

“When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only….Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks,” said Sandler. “Let the streaming begin!!!!”
