Report: Obama shared elevator with armed ex-con in Atlanta

“His life was in danger," one congressman told The Washington Post.

According to a report from ABC News, President Barack Obama recently shared an elevator with an armed security contractor who also happened to be an ex-con. The incident reportedly took place during the president’s trip to Atlanta earlier this month to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Washington Post reports that the ex-con behaved strangely while on the elevator with the president, taking photos even after being asked to stop. After the president exited the elevator, several Secret Service agents interrogated the man and discovered that he had a criminal record.

“You have a convicted felon within arm’s reach of the president, and they never did a background check,” Utah Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz told The Washington Post. “Words aren’t strong enough for the outrage I feel for the safety of the president and his family.”

According to the Washington Examiner, the man’s supervisor at the CDC asked the contractor to turn over his gun after the incident, surprising the agents who were interrogating the individual. The newspaper notes that only sworn law enforcement officers are allowed to carry weapons around the president.

“His life was in danger,” Chaffetz said. “This country would be a different world today if he had pulled out his gun.”
