Casting announced for the upcoming (and very real) ‘Angry Birds’ film

'Saturday Night Live' and 'Frozen' stars lead talented cast of voice actors in upcoming film based on the popular Rovio Entertainment mobile game.

With a film adaptation of Tetris reportedly in the works, it was only a matter of time before Rovio Entertainment decided to turn their popular mobile game Angry Birds into a movie. Sony Pictures and Rovio unveiled an image from the film Wednesday, and helped calm any doubts about the project by announcing the film’s surprisingly star-studded cast.

The Angry Birds mobile game revolves around a variety of super-powered birds who users can catapult into evil pigs. Knowing that this concept may be difficult to translate into a successful film, Sony assembled an impressive cast of comedic voice actors to breathe life into the animated birds. Jason Sudekis, Danny McBride, Frozen‘s Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph and Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage star as Red, Bomb, Chuck, Matilda and Mighty Eagle, respectively. Saturday Night Live‘s Bill Hader and Kat McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, and YouTube stars Smosh will also lend their voices in supporting roles in the film.

“I’m extremely proud of this cast,” said producer John Cohen. “Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent – these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re thrilled to have them all on board”.

Angry Birds, which comes from a script written by The Simpsons writer Jon Vitti, will be helmed by Wreck-it-Ralph director Clay Katis and The Smurfs director Fergal Reilly. The film launch into theaters on July 1, 2016.
