The sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will be produced and released by the channel in 2015.
Netflix continues to try to steer the wave of the future. According to the New York Times, the pay service has announced that they will release an original film not only globally in select IMAX theatres but simultaneously on their channel next year.
The film will be a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the 2000 Academy Awards winner. Entitled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, it will star Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen, with Chinese director Yuen Wo-Ping taking over from original director Ang Lee.
Chief content officer at Netflix Ted Sarandos reported that he felt it was time for the company to take on the challenge of revolutionizing the traditional movie delivery system, much like it has with television through its shows Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. “What I am hoping is that it will be proof positive that the sky doesn’t fall,” he said. “These are two different experiences, like going to a football game and watching a football game on TV.”
The movie is being produced in conjunction with The Weinstein Company, an independent company that is clearly looking for new avenues to explore film. They have been working with Netflix on a event series, Marco Polo. Deadline quotes head Harvey Weinstein as stating, “The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement. We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship.”
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will be released on August 28, 2015.
