Joan Rivers' 2011 'Simpsons' character makes an appearance in the show's Season 26 premiere.
Joan Rivers guest-starred in a 2011 episode of The Simpsons as Krusty the clown’s former agent Annie Dubinsky, so the hit Fox animated comedy made sure to honor the icon during its Season 26 premiere on Sunday evening. Even though production on the episode ended months ago, the series’ executive producer pulled strings to arrange the last-minute addition of her old character in tribute.
The season premiere focused on the death of Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, father of the fan-favorite character Krusty the Clown. In the episode’s closing musical number, viewers got to see Krusty’s imagining of a “Jewish heaven,” which included Albert Einstein dancing with Golda Meir; Harpo Marx with Chico Marx; and Groucho Marx with Karl Marx. For a quick second, Rivers’ 2011 character can fittingly be seen in a VIP section, just below the “Super VIP” section which contained Jesus and Rodney Dangerfield.
“She did the show three years ago and it was really sweet,” executive producer Al Jean told USA Today. “I had met her and told her how when my parents went to Vegas in the ’70s, all they could talk about was seeing her act and how funny she was.”
“About a week after she passed away, I thought that it wouldn’t be hard for us to just put her in, because she had done the show and we had the design.”
Jean told viewers to watch for Joan’s character before the episode aired, tweeting, “Watch towards the end for brief freeze frame tribute to Joan Rivers. And quick hertzfeldt reprise!”
