Two stranded hikers were rescued.
A terrible thunderstorm rattled Phoenix, Arizona, Saturday, leaving behind flooded roads, toppled trees strewn through streets, delayed flights and thousands without power.
The number of people without power reached over 90,000, according to the Arizona Public Service reported on ABC 15 out of Phoenix. The number has now lowered to the hundreds. Eight-hundred, according to the Salt River Project as reported by the Associated Press Sunday.
On ABC 15, Steven Gotfried with APS said, “We appreciate our customers’ patience as we look to restore power as safely as possible. We want to let customers know that the way we go about doing this is that we look to make those repairs that can bring the most amount of customers up in the shortest time possible…. We are looking at repairs to take a few days.”
No injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service said Phoenix received a record high of 1.6 inches of rain while some surrounding areas received over two inches.
Two stranded hikers were rescued. According to Phoenix Fire Captain Benjamin Santillan, one of them was an adult female on 730 E Desert Foothills — rescuers responded to her distress call for assistance finding her way down a mountain.
Fire Captain Santillan also said his department received several calls to put out transformer fires.
One fire resulting from a downed power line started at a business near 26th Avenue and Thomas Road. No firefighters were injured and the fire was quickly controlled.
