A Japanese volcano erupted on Saturday, and it is believed to be responsible for at least 30 deaths.
According to Fox News, 30 people are believed to be dead due to the eruption of a volcano in Japan. While the people have not been confirmed dead as of yet, they are believed to have suffered heart and lung failure, and upon being found, the people were said to not be breathing and their hearts weren’t beating.
For the first time in over 30 years, Mount Ontake, which is located in Central Japan, erupted shortly before noon on Saturday. Some 250 people were initially trapped as the volcano erupted, but most of those people were able to make it to safety by Saturday night. The eruption came without warning, which is a rarity in Japan.
The 30 people who are believed to have died from the eruption cannot be confirmed dead until police doctors examine the bodies. That confirmation should come within the next week or so.
Military helicopters have been in the process of helping people escape from the mountainside. Seven people were rescued early Sunday morning, but several dozen people are reportedly still missing. Also, several rescue workers have been injured during their efforts.
The Japanese fire and police departments, the military, and rescue workers will all be working to help those in need.
There are still large white plumes of gas hanging over Mount Ontake. There is no word as to when the volcano will settle down. The alert level for Mount Ontake has been raised to a level 3 by Japan’s meteorological agency, according to the Huffington Post. The agency has said that debris from the volcano could fall up to 2.5 miles away.
