The teen told his friends about the explosive device and that someone relayed the information to a school staff member, who telephoned police.
A 16-year-old Oregon boy was arrested on Thursday after police say he brought a homemade bomb to St. Helens High School in St. Helens, Oregon, Reuters reports.
According to The Associated Press, a bomb squad found the homemade device after searching the school. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
“We’re talking about some young kids that added a little bit of this, that and came up with this device that, yes, it was explosive and yes, it could have hurt somebody. But to what end I don’t know,” said St. Helens Police Chief Terry Moss, according to KGW-TV. “We’re not talking about a situation where they’d blow up the school, of course, but certainly someone could’ve been hurt.”
KGW-TV adds that the teen told his friends about the explosive device and that someone relayed the information to a school staff member, who telephoned police.
Reuters notes that following the staff member’s 911 call, students were evacuated to a nearby elementary school.
According to KATU News, the teen faces several felony charges, including Felony Possession of an Explosive Device, Felony Manufacturing of an Explosive Device and Disorderly Conduct.
