The end of singers Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo’s romantic relationship made headlines Thursday. The pair’s split was confirmed by multiple sources to People Magazine.

Sparks and Derulo went on to publicly confirm the split through different channels.

“Don’t cry because it’s over,” tweeted Sparks on Friday, “smile because it happened.”

This was the first acknowledgement by Sparks that her three-year relationship with Derulo has ended.

On Thursday, Derulo appeared on the Twin Cities radio station 101.3 KDWB to participate in an on-air interview with local disc jockey Big D. The radio personality pushed Derulo on the breakup issue, asking about his split from Sparks, but Derulo was resistant to comment, saying “I’d rather not, man…”

Though when pressed, Derulo went on to say that he and Sparks are on good terms.

“Yeah, everything is cool,” said Derulo, before explaining that the breakup is “not a bad situation. You know, it’s not one of those kind of things.”

Sparks first rose to fame while competing on television’s American Idol. She has since recorded two studio albums and two EPs, with another album expected in fall of 2014.

Derulo is an accomplished singer-songwriter who has sold more than 30 million singles, six of which have been Top 5 singles.
