Scammers seek to capitalize on PA manhunt

Meanwhile, the manhunt for Frein, who is suspected of murdering one state trooper and injuring another, has dragged on into its second week.

If the massive police manhunt for armed and dangerous, suspected state trooper-killer, Eric Frein, was not worrisome enough for residents of Canadensis, PA, now they have a new threat to watch out for. On Thursday, PA State Police issued a warning that scam artists were using people’s eagerness to help with the search to take their money.

“It has come to our attention that residents of northeast Pennsylvania may be receiving phone calls from individuals looking to solicit money by claiming they represent the Pennsylvania State Police,” said the State Police in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “The caller claims that the department is trying to raise money to continue the search efforts for Eric Frein. This phone call is a scam. The Pennsylvania State Police do not and will not solicit money from residents, so please do not provide any personal information or offer to send money to the caller if you are contacted.”

Meanwhile, the manhunt for Frein, who is suspected of murdering one state trooper and injuring another, has dragged on into its second week. Law enforcement officials now believe that Frein may be toying with the police, Pittsburgh WPXI reports, making himself visible at times, but remaining far enough away to make him almost impossible to capture in the rough terrain.

“I almost think that some of this is a game to him,” state police Lt. Col George Bivens told WPXI.

Nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers are now involved in the search.
