Report: U.S. Justice Department to review Ohio Wal-Mart shooting

The Justice Department's review of this officer-involved shooting case is the latest in a string of investigations into the tactics of police departments across the nation.

According to a report from The Associated Press, the U.S. Justice Department will review the officer-involved shooting of a black man at an Ohio Wal-Mart.

The Justice Department “will conduct a thorough and independent review of the evidence and take appropriate action if the evidence indicates a prosecutable violation of federal criminal civil rights statutes,” a statement read, according to Reuters.

On Wednesday, an Ohio grand jury chose not to press charges against two white law enforcement officers who shot and killed 22-year-old John Crawford III while he held a pellet gun in a Wal-Mart.

The New York Times reports that surveillance video from Wal-Mart showed the deceased individual moving about in the store while using his cell phone and then picking up the pellet gun. 911 was called and when police arrived Crawford was hit twice while still holding the pellet gun.

“The Crawford family is extremely disappointed, disgusted and confused,” the Crawford family said in a statement obtained by The Wall Street Journal. “They are heartbroken that justice was not done in the tragic death of their only son.”

WSJ notes that the Justice Department’s review of this officer-involved shooting case is the latest in a string of investigations into the tactics of police departments across the nation.
