Woman claiming ‘Frozen’ was based on her life story sues Disney for $250 million

Writer claims the characters, story and feeling of 'Frozen' were stolen from her 2010 autobiography.

Disney’s Frozen has earned over $1.2 billion worldwide, and one woman is hoping to get a large cut of the popular film’s massive earnings. Isabella Tanikumi, who also goes by L. Amy Gonzalez, is suing Disney for $250 million for supposedly plagiarizing her life story to make the hit animated film.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen, Frozen tells the story of a brave princess and her sister, a newly-crowned queen whose magical powers inadvertently created an eternal winter in their kingdom. Despite the film’s cast also consisting of a talking snowman, rock trolls, a rugged iceman, and his pet reindeer, Tanikumi maintains that the story, characters and feeling of the film were copied from her 2010 autobiography. In the autobiography, entitled Living My Truth, Tanikumi writes about growing up in the Andean mountains of Peru.

“In response to your query regarding Isabella Tanikumi’s claim against Disney, she has requested that I email you the attached Complaint which was filed this past Monday in the Federal District Court,” said Tanikumi’s lawyer William T. Anastasio in a statement to E! News. “Ms. Tanikumi is a very private individual and does not wish to be interviewed at this time. As the case moves through the Courts I am sure more information will become available concerning her claims.”

Tanikumi’s complaint points out 18 parallels between her autobiography and Frozen, and claims these similarities prove that everything from the characters and their names to the relationship between the two sisters were copied from her life story.

Walt Disney Company has not yet released a comment on the impending lawsuit.
