Product defect or Internet hoax? Apple faces a potential PR nightmare with its flagship product.
A potential problem with the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus is creating a public relations nightmare for Apple. New owners are flooding social media, claiming that the phones are flimsy and bend easily, with people posting photos online. Reports are that users discovered the bend from being in the front pocket of their pants. One user reported a significant bend in his brand new phone after sitting down on and off for about 18 hours. The weak spot seems to sit just above the mid section of the phone. Some YouTube users have demonstrated that the iPhone 6 Plus can even be bent with nothing but bare hands and some force.
Some reviewers have put forward the theory that since the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are the thinnest phones ever made by Apple, and this could be a contributing factor in the failure. But others disagree with the idea that the phones are cheaply made. While many users have not had problems with their devices, the possibility remains that given the right amount of pressure in the correct spots, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can be bent.
As usual, there were many Twitter users who found humor in the situation, tagging the issue with the hashtag “#BendGate”. Hipsters were the frequent target. Nick Disney @ndisney wrote “I hope the #iphone6 #BendGate issue helps to rid the world of hipster skinny jeans. That would Job’s greatest gift to the world, ever.” Michael Hepples @michaelwpg joked “All I get from this #bendgate stuff is a mental image of a conflicted hipster holding an iPhone 6 in one hand, and skinny jeans in the other.”
So far, Apple has not offered any statement on the subject, which many are claiming is just the latest internet hoax. For now, users should follow the old adage: “Buyer beware.”
