Fear of job loss can increase asthma risk, study finds

All the participants were asked about their thoughts regarding the possibility of job loss following the massive economic turmoil that plagued Europe starting in 2008.

New research has uncovered a possible link between first-time asthma attacks and stress, particularly related to possible job loss.

Researchers analyzed answers from a survey completed by more than 7,000 participants from the German population between 2009 and 2011. Included in the survey were questions related to asthma.

All the participants were asked about their thoughts regarding the possibility of job loss following the massive economic turmoil that plagued Europe starting in 2008.

Answers to such questions were graded from zero to 100 percent in 10 percent increments. The answers were then categorized into high and low/no threat.

Researchers found that 105 of the survey’s respondents suffered new cases of asthma, split rather evenly between men and women. There was a higher tendency for those fearing job loss over the next two years to be younger and less educated. They were also more likely to be single and earning a lower income.

Taking into account depression, lifestyle and a number of socioeconomic factors, the researchers discovered a link between increased asthma risk and a heightened fear of job insecurity. The risk of asthma increased by 24 percent for every 25 percent rise in perceived threat of loss of job.

Although the study is mainly observational, the researchers say that their findings are consistent with other studies that have unveiled the potential link between psychological stress and the onset of new asthma cases.
