Website which originally claimed to possess nudes of Emma Watson revealed to be publicity stunt to shut down controversial forum 4Chan.
After Emma Watson delivered a speech on feminism and sexual equality at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Sunday, a website titled “Emma Watson You Are Next” threatened to publish nude photos of the young Harry Potter actress. However, that site was exposed Wednesday as a mere publicity stunt to rally people to fight for the termination of controversial forum 4Chan.org.
Over the past month, iCloud hackers published naked photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Kate Upton and hundreds of other celebrities on 4Chan.org, and it was assumed these same hackers were behind the threatened leak of Watson’s nudes. “She makes stupid feminist speeches at UN, and now her nudes will be online,” stated one comment on the site. However, after the five day countdown on “Emma Watson You Are Next” expired Wednesday, users were not provided with scandalous images of Watson. Instead, the page redirected to rantic.com, where operators called for 4Chan.org to be taken offline.
A self-described “social media marketing enterprise,” rantic.com urges visitors to “join us as we shutdown (sic) 4chan and prevent more private pictures from being leaked. None of these women deserve this and together we can make a change.”
Operators for the website also published an open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, urging him to take action and prevent any continued invasion of celebrity privacy.
“We have been hired by celebrity publicists to bring this disgusting issue to attention. The recent 4chan celebrity nude leaks in the past 2 months have been an invasion of privacy and is also clear indication that the internet NEEDS to be censored. Every Facebook like, share & Twitter mention will count as a social signature – and will be one step closer to shutting down www.4chan.org.”
