PG-rated,Tinder-style app connects “platonic cuddlers”

New application brings "cuddle-seekers" together for a "PG-rated experience."

An increasing number of users are solely downloading popular dating app Tinder to find a hook-up partner, so a new application has emerged which aims to solely promote “PG-rated experiences.” Similar to its inspiration, Cuddlr allows users to browse through Facebook photos of people in their area, but this new app hopes to bring people together to cuddle regardless of whether or not they are attracted to each other.

Cuddlr aims to unite users looking for “platonic cuddles,” so it does not allow them to filter their potential partners based on age or gender.

“We encourage you to consider cuddling with people who you wouldn’t date, sleep with, or even find attractive,” states the application’s website. “Hooking up is certainly not always a bad thing, but there’s definitely an under-explored time and a place for a more gentle, no-pressure intimacy, and that’s what Cuddlr aims to help with.”

Co-creator Charlie Williams explained in an article for Medium that the app will teach people that touch can be healing and does not need to be sexual.

“I love the experience of touch, and I think we don’t get enough of it,” wrote Williams. “We need to delve deeper, to go beyond rejecting cliché and start actually challenging the ways we interact. That is my intention with Cuddlr. Aside from finding like-minded cuddlers, it’s also a way of contributing to a larger discussion about closeness, intimacy, and sexuality.”

Users send each other a “cuddle request,” and the app reveals the match’s location if they accept the request. Afterward, you rate your partner with “a thumbs-up if everything went ok, or in the event of a somewhat too-grabby cuddle, you can report the user…we ban anyone who is consistently using it improperly.”

“Wait until the end of the cuddle, ask nicely, and be prepared to take either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as an answer…don’t try to ‘change gears’ midway through,” said Williams in an interview with Salon. “And certainly don’t use this app to pick people up. Sex is a great thing too, but there are other apps for that.”
