Farrell and Vaughn officially announced as stars of second season of HBO's popular gritty drama.
Matthew McConaughey’s career was given a huge boost after starring in the first season of True Detective, and creator Nic Pizzolatto believes the show can give a similar boost to the careers of two more former A-list actors hoping to break out of their rut. HBO officially confirmed Tuesday that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the highly-anticipated second season of the show.
Ferrell and Vaughn have been rumored to join the show for months, but theories often placed them as partners, similar to McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first season of True Detective. However, HBO has revealed that while Farrell will in fact portray a police officer, Vaughn will portray a “career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
This casting comes at the perfect time for Vaughn, whose career peaked after 2005’s Wedding Crashers, but went downhill fast after his comedies like Fred Claus, Four Christmases, The Watch, and Delivery Man failed to deliver at the box office.
According to the official logline for the second season, “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” Taylor Kitsch is expected to be the second officer mentioned, but sources state that the network has not yet found the third cop, who will also act as the show’s female lead. Rosario Dawson, Kelly Reilly, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Abigail Spencer, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander and Brit Marling have all reportedly been asked to read for the role.
HBO also revealed Tuesday that the new season will consist of eight one-hour episodes, and that Justin Lin, who has directed films in the Fast and Furious franchise, will helm the first two episodes. Filming is slated to begin this fall in California.
