California Governor Jerry Brown approves bills aimed at promoting electric car usage

The most notable piece of legislation is geared toward helping low-income residents afford electric vehicles.

California has more electric cars on its roads than any other state, thanks in part to the fact that Tesla Motors is based in the state. From the looks of several bills recently signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, though, the state is not satisfied and wants to increase its lead in the electric automobile race.

According to a report from the New York Times, the most notable piece of legislation is geared toward helping low-income residents afford electric vehicles. Already, California’s state government has been issuing rebate credits to help subsidize resident purchases of electric vehicles. The new bill will simply provide extra rebate credits to low-income residents, making it possible for electric cars to be owned and driven by every subset of the population.

Brown has also approved a bill that will allow electric cars to use carpool lanes in the state, which will make it easier for electric car drivers to get around on California’s busy highways. Collectively, the goal of the new legislation is to have one-million zero-emission cars on California roads by the year 2023.

All of this is a part of Brown’s main platform, which is to combat climate change in California. So far, Brown has traveled to China and Mexico to negotiate agreements for lowering greenhouse gas emissions. On Tuesday, he will join leaders of the United Nations to participate in a summit on how cities can help to fight climate change.

Brown’s decision to push for greater electric car usage in California will likely gain him significant attention at the summit. California already accounts for some 40 percent of the electric cars in the United States, and these new laws will almost undoubtedly increase that figure.
