Report: Microsoft delays launch of Xbox One in China

Microsoft did not give a concrete reason for the delay.

When the Chinese government lifted a 14-year-old gaming console ban earlier this year, it was a watershed moment for Microsoft. The United States software company had been negotiating with Chinese companies to manufacture its latest gaming console, the Xbox One, in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The Xbox One was set to make its China marketplace debut this Tuesday, September 23rd, but now, that release has been pushed back.

According to a Reuters report, Microsoft has officially delayed the launch of the Xbox One console in China. The company still says that the Xbox will be making its way to China sometime this year, but has not given a more specific estimate for a new release date.

Microsoft also did not give a concrete reason for the delay, though the Reuters report speculated that it could have something to do with the legal issues that Microsoft is currently facing in China. Currently, the Chinese government is investigating Microsoft to see if the company has violated anti-trust laws with software products like Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.

The other possible issue is that Microsoft has not yet figured out the best way to market the Xbox One to Chinese audiences. As Reuters notes, the Chinese gaming market is sizable, despite the ban on gaming consoles that went into effect all the way back in the year 2000. But while China may have the world’s third largest gaming market, the country has also developed a gaming scene that is unique from that of Japan or the United States. In the absence of consoles, Chinese gamers have turned to PC and mobile platforms to get their fix. It is unclear whether or not many of those gamers will even be interested in consoles at this point.

Even so, China’s untapped potential as a market for console gaming is large, and Microsoft is not the only company looking to take advantage of it now that the console ban has been lifted. On the contrary, Sony is also in the process of making deals with Chinese companies to launch the PlayStation 4 in China.
