A Single mother found a caregiver in her nurse for her 8-year-old who will have no family after she passes.
A 45-year-old Pennsylvania woman was given news that her liver cancer was terminal in March of this year. Tricia Somers is a single mother to 8-year-old Wesley, and has no family to take care of her son when she passes. Somers was worried about her predicament until Nurse Tricia Seaman entered her life.
“She came in and I felt this overwhelming feeling of comfort,” recalled Somers in an interview with WHTM-TV. “She’s going to take care of me. She’s the one.” Seaman helped Somers through her worst most debilitating rounds of chemotherapy, even taking Wesley to school when Somers was unable to get out bed.
As Somers was being discharged from the hospital, she requested Seaman to take care of her son after the cancer claimed her life. Albeit the overwhelming nature of the request, Seaman took the idea to her husband and family of three daughters and one boy.
In a fortunate stroke of fate, the family was looking to adopt. “I’ve never had an occasion not to trust my wife’s heart,” said Daniel Seaman. We have to do something. We have to figure out a way to make this happen.” The Seamans agreed to adopt Wesley.
Fortunately for Wesley, he would grow up in a household where his mother was known and cherished, while also being provided for in every aspect. Surprisingly mature for an 8-year-old boy, he understands that his time with his mother is limited and that his mother is helpless in leaving him to another family.
“Mom, it’s not your fault,” said Wesley to his mother. “I didn’t have anybody until now. Anybody except for you, Mommy.” Somers will continue the remainder of her care in a hospice with the Seamans and Wesley united as a singular family.
