‘Maze Runner’ a big winner at weekend box office

"The Maze Runner" had a strong opening weekend and looks to rule the box office with an estimated $24 in earnings.

Fox may have a hit on its hands with the Dystopian movie “Maze Runner”. The film, which was adapted from James Dashner’s novel of the same name, pulled in the young adult audience that is often hard to draw in to theaters.

According to early estimates the film is set to take in over $24 million over the weekend, with a strong opening on Friday. It reportedly took in between $9-10 million at 3,604 locations across the country between late Thursday night and Friday.

The film, which follows a group of teens caught in a maze and chased by monsters, cost an estimated $34 million to create so if early estimates are right then it will be close to earning its productions costs in one weekend alone.

According to Variety, the crime thriller “Walk Among The Tombstones” starring Liam Neeson isn’t going to have as much luck at the box office. It was estimated to take in a little more than half of what “The Maze Runner” did, with only $5.8 million being reported. By the end of the weekend, the film is expected to bring in between $15-17 million, which isn’t all bad but it’s not all good either.

Fox is hoping that “The Maze Runner” will have the success of “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” if it can attract the right crowd. The teen lead,  Dylan O’Brien, of “Teen Wolf”, is likely to create a buzz among young female fans but whether the film will have the buzz of the other two hit franchises remains to be seen.
