Facebook has announced that it will be releasing a new app for iOS 8, bringing a number of new features to users. Despite this, privacy settings changes on Apple's part have some users confused, with Facebook saying that nothing will change on their end.
Facebook has announced updates to its app on iOS 8, coming with easy sharing abilities and the ability to provide a better user experience with larger screens.
“Facebook for iOS 8 will have an improved experience for people who want to share content from other apps to Facebook. By simply tapping the share icon and selecting Facebook, you can choose to share a link to a website from your browser, photos or videos from your camera roll, and content from other apps,” said Adam Mosser, Product Management Director at Facebook. “Facebook for iOS 8 will have an updated share screen similar to what you already see in the Facebook app. From there, you can select the audience you want to share with, add a location, say what you’re doing, or tag friends.
Mosseri also noted that while Facebook did not change any of its location settings, Apple has. He stressed that Facebook is not collecting more user data than it was before these updates.
Apple’s location tracking options used to be “Yes/No” but are now “Aways/While Using The App/Never,” meaning that Facebook has to change location permissions for who have “Nearby Friends” turned on.
“For apps from Facebook that don’t have features that rely on getting location in the background, the Location Services setting for the iOS 8 versions will start at “While Using the App.” These apps include Messenger and Instagram.”
While Facebook has stressed that it is not collecting more user data, it has a history of confusing privacy settings. Despite this, over the past year or so the company has aimed to be much more upfront with users about privacy.
The Facebook iOS 8 app will not come out for a few more weeks, but when it does it will support the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sizes.
