Chrysler will be recalling around 189,000 SUVs, including Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos, due to a fuel pump issue that could cause the vehicle to stall.
The recall was issued today by the National Transportation Safety Board and covers some 2011 models with 3.6-liter or 5.7-liter V8 engines.
The company said that it was not aware of any accidents caused by the issue, and that dealers would replace the fuel pump relay for free starting on October 24.
Despite the large number of vehicles involved in the recall, some safety advocates are saying that it does not cover enough vehicles and that the problem could occur in millions more Chrysler, Jeep and Ram SUVs.
“Chrysler should recall them all,” said Clarence Ditlow, executive director at the Center for Auto Safety.
Ditlow’s group has also filed a petition asking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate issues involving the power system in Chrysler vehicles that could cause the vehicles to stall while driving.
The group said that they had received more than 70 complaints and that the government had received hundreds. Not only that, but the faulty modules could cause the vehicles air bags to inflate and even cause fuel pumps to continue running, which could cause fires and unwanted acceleration.
While the NHTSA has not made a decision as to whether or not they will investigate the issue, Chrysler has said that is was investigating customer complaints and retrieving vehicle parts for a closer analysis. Despite this, the company has said that all its vehicles meet federal regulations.
