The "Hamster Wheel" description is an apt one for the desk, which really is just a giant wooden wheel that someone can walk on, in place, while working at their desk.
In recent years, as reports have continued to point out the damaging effects of sitting all day, standing desks have become increasingly popular throughout American office environments. According to TIME, though, the standing desk phenomenon has now officially taken the next step: the standing, walking desk.
To be fair, the new treadmill-like desk is not actually being mass produced by any furniture company. At least not yet. Instead, the desk was dreamed up by an artist named Robb Godshaw and a developer named Will Doenlen. Both men have gotten viral attention for an Instructible tutorial that explains how you can build your own “Hamster Wheel Standing Desk.”
The “Hamster Wheel” description is an apt one for the desk, which really is just a giant wooden wheel that someone can walk on, in place, while working at their desk. In fact, the basic design and the name given to the Instructible project begs the question of whether or not Godshaw and Doenlen were kidding or somehow poking fun at the standing desk trend.
But even despite the inherent ridiculousness of having a desk that looks and functions like a hamster wheel, Godshaw and Doenlen’s design could actually be an attractive candidate for mass production. After all, most people do not get to move around enough during the work day. The desk would be especially attractive for people who like to track the number of steps they get in a day, as it would surely improve those counts at least five or tenfold.
For now, though, if you want a hamster wheel standing desk, you are going to have to build it yourself. The Instructible tutorial provided by Godshaw and Doenlen is nine steps long and requires an ample amount of plywood, plenty of wooden screws, and a couple of pipes and skateboard wheels.
