'Parks and Recreation' star Aubrey Plaza to voice internet celebrity in upcoming film.
Tabatha Bundesen turned her permanently grumpy-looking cat Tardar Sauce into an internet celebrity in 2012, and the affectionately-nicknamed “Grumpy Cat” has since been featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal and on the cover of New York magazine. The cat has over 6 million fans on Facebook, and is about to get her very own Lifetime Original Movie, entitled Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.
In the film, Grumpy Cat will be voiced by Parks and Recreation actress Aubrey Plaza, who has made a career out of looking surly herself. Best known for her role as April Ludgate in the award-winning NBC comedy series, Plaza has always been praised for her ability like she doesn’t care about anything, and will have to learn how to convey that same attitude solely through her voice.
According to the brief synopsis released online Thursday, Grumpy Cat wont be a meme or Reddit celebrity in the film. Instead, she will be “a friendless cat living in a mall pet shop,” who becomes harsh after people refuse to buy her. However, everything changes when the holidays arrive and 12-year-old Chrystal, to be portrayed by Mama’s Megan Charpentier, discovers she can hear Grumpy Cat talk. They then get involved with an exotic dog’s kidnapping, and Chrystal gets trapped in the mall after closing hours.
According to the press release, the film will answer questions like “Will Grumpy learn the true meaning of Christmas? Or will it be, in her words, the ‘Worst Christmas Ever?’”
The film, which premieres on Lifetime on Saturday, Nov. 29, is directed by Jeff Morris. Morris also wrote the screenplay for the film alongside someone who has experience with moody, talking cats – Garfield 2 director Tim Hill. Daniel Roebuck, Veronica Allcino, Isaac Haig, Evan Todd, and Shauna Johannesen star in the film, and comedian Russell Peters will reportedly portray the mall Santa Claus.
