The Mars rover Curiosity is currently seeking whether Mars would be a hospitable environment for human life.
Elon Musk, the Canadian-American business magnate best known for his involvement in PayPal and Tesla Motors, recently stated that his company wants to build a Martian metropolis in the coming century.
In a press statement on September 8, Musk discussed his plans of building a city on the Red Planet through extensive terraforming and population resettlement. He has previously stated that humans will be visiting Mars in the next 10 years, claiming that as “a multi-planet species, humanity as we know it is likely to propagate into the future much further than if we are a single-planet species.”
Musk views the Falcon Heavy rocket as a key tool for visiting the Red Planet. The rocket has revolutionized space travel by vastly increasing distance and loads for modern spacecraft. Musk has described it as a necessary and critical method for traveling between Mars and Earth.
SpaceX isn’t alone in seeking to colonize Mars. The company is competing for a contract with NASA to ferry astronauts back and forth to the International Space Station. Other competitors include Boeing and Sierra Nevada. NASA is expected to announce the winner of the contract in the coming month.
The Mars rover Curiosity is currently seeking whether Mars would be a hospitable environment for human life. Curiosity is set to explore Mt. Sharp in the next few weeks, an area which could provide information on whether Mars ever contained life or would be an area where microbes- or maybe in the future, major cities- could flourish.
