Robin Thicke acknowledges he didn’t write ‘Blurred Lines’

In legal testimony released on Monday, the singer claims he was too high and drunk to have had any part in writing his 2013 hit.

The lines continue to get more blurred. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Thicke, singer Pharrell Williams, and rapper “T.I” or Clifford Harris, Jr. filed suit in California last August to counter claims by Marvin Gaye’s family that their 2013 hit song Blurred Lines was a copy of Gaye’s song Got to Give It Up. Both Thicke and Pharrell gave testimony in April that despite previous claims to the contrary, the song was mainly written by Pharrell.

In legal depositions obtained by the Hollywood Reporter on Monday, when asked about his contribution to the song, Thicke admitted under oath that “I was high on Vicodin and alcohol when I showed up to the studio… The reality is, is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song.” Thicke acknowledged that he had claimed otherwise, saying, “I wanted to be more involved than I actually was by the time, nine months later, it became a huge hit and I wanted credit. So I started kind of convincing myself that I was a little more a part of it than I was.” Thicke also reported the story remained alive as he continued to take drugs during the media blitz and “didn’t do a sober interview.”

While he was on the stand, Pharrell claimed the song composition was “mine.” He said he gave Thicke the songwriting credit willingly and that it “happens every day in our industry.”

Thicke has allegedly given up Vicodin but not alcohol.
