West and wife Kim Kardashian comment on the incident being referred to as "Wheelchair Gate."
Kanye West made headlines after he reportedly tried to force two disabled fans to rise from their wheelchairs and stand during his concert in Sydney, Australia last Friday. The controversial rapper is now trying to defend his mistake, and claims his religious and family background should prove to people he had “no malicious intent to offend” anyone.
West stopped Friday’s concert when he noticed that, despite ordering everyone in the front section of the concert hall to rise, two fans remained seated in their wheelchairs. He sent members of his team into the audience to confirm their disability, and only backed off once they verified the fans were physically unable to stand.
The “Yeezus” rapper addressed the accident in a five-minute speech onstage at a concert in Brisbane on Monday night.
“Take a step back and look at this: I’m a married Christian man with a family. At my concerts, I make sure everybody has as good a time as possible. So all this demonizing me, it aint’ goin’ to work after a while. Pick a new target,” he stated, not exactly apologizing for his lack of tact in the matter. “If you take someone that can go from being a rock star across the globe and everything and make the decision to pick one woman and raise a family … there’s enough things workin’ against you. I’m not going to make one of them Ben Affleck statements and s—”
“This is real expression. This is real artistry. You know, an artist’s career doesn’t happen in one cycle of news – an artist’s career happens in a lifetime. And if you’re a true artist, you’re willing to die for what you believe in.”
Kim Kardashian defended her husband on Instagram Monday, writing that the awkward incident didn’t happen quite as reports claim.
“Its frustrating that something so awesome could be clouded by lies. Kanye never asked anyone in a wheel chair to stand up & the audience videos show that. He asked for everyone to stand up & dance UNLESS they were in a wheel chair.”
