Many of the audience members surrounding the fan in the wheelchair scream “yes” after West asks if he is in a wheelchair.
Kanye West had yet another moment recently at his concert in Sydney, Australia. He did not simply ask, but demanded everyone stand up, singling people out including one concert-goer who was wheelchair-bound.
As seen in this video of the concert, the crowd at first supports West, chanting “stand up, stand up,” and booing when West says he sees people still sitting down. West apparently jokes, “what, are you in a wheelchair?” to those still sitting, then, “Okay, well, we gotta wait then.” He was apparently unaware some fans were actually wheelchair-bound.
He refuses to start his song as the wait, which is at at least 2 ½ minutes according to the video, continues. He comments that this is the longest he has had to wait for everyone at his concert to stand up. Right after this comment, he says, “Now, if he’s in a wheelchair, then it’s fine.”
Many of the audience members surrounding the fan in the wheelchair scream “yes” after West asks if he is in a wheelchair. According to The Daily Mail Australia, West sent bodyguard Pascal Duvier to confirm the fan was in a wheelchair before he would start the song, Good Life.
The Daily Mail Australia also says there was another guest who could not stand that West did acknowledge in a much more timely manner. This guest had a prosthetic limb, which he removed and held up for West to see. West said to him, “Okay, you fine!”
While this moment was a fairly awkward one for Kanye, it will likely not reach the supreme viral status of his Sept. 13, 2009 moment at the VMA’s when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s speech.
