LG and Samsung tangle over appliance vandalism

A top LG executive allegedly damaged rival Samsung's laundry machines in Germany; mud- slinging ensues.

Competition was already intense between South Korean powerhouse tech giants LG and Samsung, which fiercely compete in the global market for wearables, smartphones and flat-screen TVs. Now, the back-and-forth is getting downright dirty as an LG executive in charge of the home appliance division is suspected of damaging several Samsung washing machines in Berlin, Germany.

According to Reuters, an LG spokeswoman confirmed that Jo Seong-jin, head of the company’s home appliances division, was among the people named in Samsung’s investigation request.

Seong-jin was attending the IFA event in the country and reportedly visited the two high-end stores where the rival’s machines were installed. What happened when he and other employees were there is still murky, but apparently some Samsung machines has broken hinges.

Once Samsung discovered LG employees may have been involved, they screamed the vandalism. The Galaxy S5 maker notified prosecutors in Seoul to look into it, according to Reuters. It was not immediately known whether an investigation was open or what charges Seong-jin or other LG employees could potentially face.

LG is outright rejecting that its employees purposely vandalized its rivals product. Their story, the UK Register reported, is that they inadvertently broke the doors on the machines while “perusing their competitor’s wares.”

LG further insisted the machines had “weak hinges,” according to Reuters, which reported German authorities interviewed the LG employees who may have been involved. The LG employees agreed to pay for the damage in four of the machines, although they admitted to breaking only two of them.

Samsung called the incident “very unfortunate” in a prepared statement, in particular the involvement of a rival high-ranking executive.
