The woman's driver's license and school ID were discovered near her body.
The Associated Press reports that police have discovered the body of Anna Marie Smith, an Appalachian State University student who went missing several weeks ago. The body was discovered on Saturday in a forested area close to campus.
Citing police, ABC News notes that Smith’s driver’s license and school ID were discovered near her body. Police say that Smith was last spotted at ASU by her roommate on Tuesday, September 2.
WYFF Greenville reports that a cause of death will be determined upon the completion of an autopsy. However, The Charlotte Observer says that they learned from several sources with knowledge of the crime scene that Smith may have committed suicide by asphyxiation.
“Having one of our own missing struck the Appalachian community very hard, and this very sad news is heartbreaking for us all,” Sheri Everts, the chancellor of ASU, wrote in a statement. “The loss of Anna will continue to weigh heavy on our hearts. I ask that we all join together to support and care for one another as we mourn.”
