When interviewed by police, Peterson referred to the incident as a "whooping," according to CBS Houston.
Adrian Peterson, the award-winning running back for the Minnesota Vikings, turned himself into authorities after being charged with child abuse, according to local Houston news outlet KHOU.com.
The 29-year-old Texas native is accused of negligent injury of a child, and allegedly used a small tree branch, commonly known as a “switch” to swat at his four-year old son. The Minneapolis Star Tribune is now reporting that Peterson will not be playing on Sunday, even though he was released on a $15,000 bond.
When interviewed by police, Peterson referred to the incident as a “whooping,” according to CBS Houston. He told authorities that he disciplined his son after he had pushed another one of Peterson’s children off of a motorbike video game. He said that he struck the child repeatedly.
Peterson allegedly went into more detail about the incident via text messages, writing that he “felt bad after the fact when I (sic) notice the switch was wrapping around hitting (sic) I thigh.” In another text message he described injuring the child’s scrotum and feeling bad about it. The police report, obtained by CBS Houston, said that the doctor treating the son described the injuries as “open wounds” and included scratches on his buttocks, back, thighs and hand.
TMZ.com published photos from the alleged incident, which occurred this past May, along with a statement from Peterson’s attorney, saying “He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in East Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened.”
