Actress Daniele Watts had a mistaken run-in with law enforcement.
Actress Daniele Watts had a mistaken run-in with law enforcement. Los Angeles police mistook her for a prostitute, and Watts was accosted and handcuffed. She explained on Facebook that she was being affectionate with her husband Brian Lucas, who is white, when two officers approached her. Apparently, they had received a call about lewd behavior and questioned the couple. After refusing to show her ID, Watts was taken in the back seat of a police car.
Watts played the slave CoCo in Django Unchained, a film that starred Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington. She has also appeared on Showtime’s Weeds, and is currently on Partners, a sitcom playing the daughter of Martin Lawrence. Watts posted a photo of herself visibly upset, crying in shorts, running shoes and a New York t-shirt. “Today, I was handcuffed…after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.” The actress said police questioned whether the couple actually knew each other. Her husband, a celebrity chef, shared a similar account of the incident.
However, another officer claims there is no record of the actress being arrested or taken in for questioning. The LAPD has no further comments on the arrest. The couple is upset by the incident, and for them is another painful example of racial profiling. In addition, she had been on the phone with her dad. Watts recalled when she was growing up the challenges her father faced at being confronted by law enforcement for acting suspicious. The actress was let go and no charges were filed. But the incident has angered her and her husband. Watts felt betrayed by the law that she could get arrested for kissing Lucas in a parked car. The couple is embarrassed by the arrest, but moving forward.
