Rep. Mark Sanford uses Facebook to call off engagement

Sanford blames drawn out divorce proceedings for the split.

In a rambling, quasi-incoherent 2,346-word Facebook post Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) has announced that he is hiring a lawyer to assist with the years-long divorce proceedings with his ex-wife Jenny Sanford. He also stated that he was splitting up with his fiancee, Maria Belen Chapur, after over four years together.

“I apologize for the length of this post, but given the gravity of the issue at hand when I sat down to write late last night a long list of things came to my mind,” Sanford wrote.

The announcement comes after Jenny Sanford demanded that the congressman undergo a psychiatric evaluation and complete anger management and parenting classes as part of divorce proceedings, as well as severely limiting Sanford’s visitation rights with their youngest son, the Washington Post reports.

“I am comfortable knowing I have tried near everything within my power to avoid lawyers and court – and in my belief that I will continue to work to avoid acrimony going forward,” Sanford wrote.

This latest development may bring renewed attention to Sanford’s first brush with notoriety in 2009, when then-Governor Sanford went missing for several days. Aides claimed he had been hiking the Appalachian Trail, but Sanford later admitted in a tearful television appearance that he had traveled to Argentina to be with his “soul mate,” Belen Chapur. At the time a rising GOP star, Sanford saw the incident destroy his presidential ambitions, not to mention wreck his marriage.

The ongoing soap opera seems to have wrecked Sanford’s relationship with Chapur now too, as Sanford blames the drawn out divorce proceedings for the split.

“No relationship can stand forever this tension of being forced to pick between the one you love and your own son or daughter, and for this reason Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement.”
