General Motors has halted sales of the 2015 Corvette after it was found that the vehicle may have issues with its airbags detaching from the steering wheel.
General Motors has put a halt to Corvette sales after it was found that up to 2,000 2015 Corvettes may have faulty airbags. The vehicles are now being inspected for a “suspect part” that may cause the cars airbags to malfunction.
The carmaker has also stopped production and shipments of the vehicles from its Bowling Green, KY plant, where Corvettes have been assembled for over 30 years.
The issue causes airbags to detach from steering wheels. An additional 800 Corvettes are being held back at dealerships because they may have defective parking break cables. According to some rumors, GM will be issuing two recalls related to the Corvette, however neither of these has been confirmed by the carmaker.
In separate issues, General Motors is recalling a total of around 270,000 vehicles due to various mechanical issues. This include 200,000 Saturn VUEs built from 2002-2004 that may have faulty ignition switches. GM is reportedly aware of two accidents because of the issue, one that resulted in an injury.
The Corvette issues comes after a brief silence from the company in relation to recalls. In the past couple of months, GM has been recalling vehicles every few weeks. In fact, GM CEO Mary Barra recently said during a visit to India that the company is done issuing recalls on older vehicles after a months-long safety review.
Strictly speaking, the company has not issued any recalls since Barra made that statement, however it seems as though a recall may be on the brink of happening. It is likely that the company will issue a recall in the coming months. In total the company has recalled around 29 million vehicles this year.
