Warner Bros. is making plans to add 'Titans' to DC's growing list of primetime series.
Marvel Comics is currently dominating the box office, but rival DC Comics is preparing to make big moves in rapidly expanding its live-action TV universe. Warner Bros. is increasing the number of DC Comics primetime series from one to four this season, and the studio has now revealed they are nearing a pilot order for a TNT series based on the Teen Titans superhero team.
Last season, both powerhouse comic companies boasted one successful primetime series, with Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD growing in popularity on ABC and DC’s Arrow continuing to draw viewers on the CW. However, DC is about to add The Flash, Gotham and Constantine to their lineup and is prepping another major broadcast franchise based on Supergirl. Titans, the proposed TNT drama series, will reportedly be written by Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes.
“Based on characters from DC Comics, Titans revolves around a group of young superheroes-to-be who are recruited from every corner of the DC universe. The action-themed drama centers on Dick Grayson, who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new superheroes including Starfire, Raven and more. The show is described as a dramatic adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book titles ever,” states the reported synopsis.
This series would not be Warner Bros.’ first take at the Titans characters, as they were used on the animated series Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network.
Unfortunately for superhero fans, Titans may not be on the top of TNT’s priority list. The network is currently undergoing a regime change, and already has two other drama pilots awaiting a formal green light – Amblin TV’s Lumen, and the Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay-produced Cocaine Cowboys.
