Nicki Minaj recently requested to speak to the students of her old high school, but administrators at New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High surprisingly turned the “Anaconda” singer away.

“I wanted to go back to my HS and speak to the students, but the new principal declined,” Minaj wrote this week on Twitter. “No need for me to inspire them, I guess.”

“That school changed my life and I wanted to pay it forward to the students there now. I was really looking forward to it.”

Throughout her music career, Minaj has exhibited nothing but praise when speaking about the incredibly-competitive performing arts school, one which prepares students for careers as dancers, singers, and actors. In fact, she told Teen Vogue last year that LaGuardia, a school which also happens to be the inspiration for the musical Fame, “was the first place I felt like I really fit in. Everyone there was creative.” She explained how the school provided an environment where “For once, I didn’t feel like there was something weird about me.”

When asked to explain why her appearance was denied, the New York Department of Education spoke on behalf of LaGuardia High and explained that former graduates are allowed to visit the school so long as they don’t interrupt the students’ learning.

“Of course alumni are welcome back to our campuses and we love to celebrate their success, providing it does not interrupt the educational process,” stated a DOE official. “Alumni visit all the time and address students. However, we do not allow reality TV to be filmed on school property. For documentaries, any visit to a public school must be educational in nature and cannot intrude on instruction.”

However, Minaj never said the appearance would have included reality TV cameras. Because of this, it remains  unclear if that is the true reason she was turned away.
