Yorkville Endoscopy made its first public statement to deny a fast-spreading story about what happened to Rivers.
A week later and still no answers. Legendary comedian Joan Rivers passed away on September 4 at the age of 81, but the events surrounding her death continue to remain murky. It is known that she stopped breathing during a procedure at the privately owned clinic Yorkville Endoscopy on August 28, but due to medical privacy, the details of exactly why she went into respiratory distress have not been released.
On Wednesday both TMZ and the New York Daily News published reports from an unnamed source that Rivers’ scheduled throat exam had turned fatal when her personal doctor attempted to perform another different test at the same time. According to the Daily News story, Rivers’ ear, nose, and throat specialist was with her in the clinic and “noticed something” on her vocal cords. Allegedly he requested to use the clinic’s instruments to perform a biopsy while she was still under general anesthesia, which caused Rivers’ vocal cords to seize, cutting off her air supply.
Despite this story gaining traction in the media, Reuters reports Yorkville Endoscopy itself has denied it. Although the clinic again cannot legally refer to Rivers by name in the press, they made a general statement late Wednesday to refute the Daily News story. “A biopsy of the vocal cords has never been performed at Yorkville Endoscopy,” the statement reads. “General anesthesia has never been administered.” The statement was the clinic’s first related to the Rivers.
The State Health Department is continuing to look into the matter.
