Viacom and Sony announce deal to bring cable networks to cord-cutters

The deal covers both live and on-demand programming.

More consumers than ever before are canceling their cable service in favor of receiving content streamed over the Internet. That has companies and networks scrambling to find ways to get those viewers back, even if it’s on the consumer’s terms.

Sony and DirecTV are both planning to offer internet-based television, in wake of the growing popularity of Roku boxes and gaming consoles that offer apps such as Hulu, Netflix, and various other content sites.

But Sony has struck first, with an announcement earlier today that they will offer up to twenty Viacom owned networks on their Sony cloud service, which as of yet does not have an official name.

According to a written statement from Viacom, the deal will allow subscribers access to networks “BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons, Spike, TV Land and VH1, BET Gospel, Centric, Logo, CMT Pure Country, MTV Hits, MTV James, mtvU, Palladia, TeenNick, Vh1 Classic and Vh1 Soul and all available in HD”.

Phillipe Dauman, President and CEO of Viacom lauds the deal between the two entities as a pioneer in the way television is brought to their audience. “Viacom always strives to create transformational opportunities that combine consumer value and technological innovation,” said Dauman. “Given our young, tech-savvy audiences, our networks are essential for any new distribution platform, and we’re excited to be among the many programmers that will help power Sony’s new service and advance a new era for television.”

The deal covers both live and on-demand programming allowing users to stream Viacom content on any mobile device through Viacom’s TV Everywhere app.

However, the launch of Sony’s new venture is still undetermined. There has been no announcement yet as to when consumers can expect to have access to a subscription for Sony’s unnamed internet-based television service. But according to the company, those details will be revealed “in the near future”.
