The rock group U2 has a new album out. You can’t buy it yet… but you can download it for free through iTunes.

The announcement was made after the band performed one of their new songs at a launch event for Apple’s new products the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch.

Members of the iTunes service, to date numbering almost half a billion people in over 100 different countries across the world, can download the album in its entirety, free of charge until October 13. The digital giveaway is a first for the band, but it also allows the fan-base to reconnect with U2 after what has been a five year hiatus since their previous effort, No Line on the Horizon, in 2009.

Musically, the tracks on Songs of Innocence mark a return to the band’s roots. Each one revisiting some aspect of their youth growing up in Dublin. Bono, describes the album as a collection of songs that recall “first journeys.” The prevalent themes throughout touch upon childhood experiences, family, neighborhoods, religion, lovers, regrets, and of course, the power and influence of music that helped shape the men and the musicians they are today.

There are tributes to rockers such as Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer of the Clash. Each one making a distinct mark on the band and Bono in particular. He credits Ramone for helping establish his singing style, able to combine anthemic melodies with a punk sensibility, and he heralds Strummer as a musician and activist who inspired the band to become more socially conscious of the world around them.

The band says it’s “the most personal album we’ve ever written.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, Bono expressed his concern that the band was losing relevance with today’s audience and writing this new material was a way to re-examine why each of them wanted to be in a band in the first place. The album is meant to explore their roots.

Songs of Innocence is available now on iTunes, iTunes Radio, and Beats Music.
