Stevie Wonder accuses Ferguson Mayor of having “blinders on”

Grammy-winner speaks out against Ferguson Mayor James Knowles one month after 18-year old Michael Brown was shot and killed while unarmed.

Various celebrities have voiced their opinions on last month’s shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, and music icon Stevie Wonder is now calling out the city’s mayor for his “unfortunate” ignorance in the matter.

Following Michael Brown’s death last month, the unrest in Ferguson drew worldwide attention and thousands gathered to stage protests in the city.

“I don’t know if the mayor has blinders on,” said Wonder in an interview Wednesday, speaking out against Ferguson Mayor James Knowles’ claims that there is “no racial divide” in the city. “To say that he didn’t know that there was a racial or cultural problem in the city is unfortunate.”

Wonder’s comments came after announcing his upcoming fall North American tour, which will include performances of new songs which were partly inspired by his monitoring of world news.

“Obviously the good, the bad and the ugly, I’ve seen it all. I check out all of it,” he said. “I am always challenged (by) anything that’s negative to write something like… how can we take it from that wrong place to getting it back to the right place? Unfortunately we’re living in a time of disposable love and we’ve got to get it from that place to really valuing life, valuing love and valuing each other.”

Wonder’s fall tour will feature songs from his Grammy-winning 1976 double album “Songs in the Key of Life,” and is set to begin Nov. 6 in New York City. It will continue through 10 additional cities, and end in Oakland, California, in December.
